The story of Nambu ironware begins in the early 17th century, when the Nambu clan invited kettle makers from Kyoto to Morioka, the capital of their domain. The region's abundant iron resources and skilled craftsmen created the perfect conditions for this art form to flourish.

The Making Process
Each piece of Nambu ironware goes through a rigorous 68-step process that can take up to two months to complete. From the initial design to the final finishing touches, every step requires the steady hand and trained eye of a master craftsman.
The most iconic feature of Nambu iron kettles is the arare pattern — the delicate hailstone-like bumps that cover the surface. Creating these tiny protrusions requires extraordinary skill, as each one must be individually formed in the mold before casting.
A Living Tradition
Today, approximately 70 artisans continue the Nambu ironware tradition in the Morioka and Mizusawa areas. While honoring centuries-old techniques, many craftspeople are also innovating, creating modern designs that appeal to contemporary audiences while maintaining the essential character of Nambu Tekki.
